Belonging and Voice Examined in New Exhibition at Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts
I let them in. Conditional Hospitality and The Stranger
Omaha, Neb.—Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts invites the public to view I let them in. Conditional Hospitality and The Stranger. The exhibition will be on view through February 23, 2019.
Amidst declining refugee resettlement and increasing xenophobia in the United States, I let them in. Conditional Hospitality and The Stranger examines who is afforded the right to speak or the ability to be understood amongst dominant narratives and systems. The two-person exhibition features videos by Kader Attia and Candice Breitz. Internationally-renowned artist Attia's two works investigate mental illnesses in different cultures, different approaches to healing in Western and non-Western societies and the power of storytelling to repair in the wake of colonization and globalization. Breitz’s critically-acclaimed immersive video installation juxtaposes first-person stories from people who fled their countries due to oppressive conditions with re-performances of their narratives by two Hollywood stars who are the epitome of visibility. In doing so, she invites viewers to consider how formulas of representation govern whose stories are valued and who we feel empathy for.
