At the time of his death in 2009 at age 58, Carl Plansky had just hit his stride.  Like so many respected and notable painters, Plansky fought the constant battle of achieving commercial success while still holding true to his artistic vision.  It was a position he found equally frustrating and empowering.  He said, “the art world is cool and hip.  [I am] too hot and passionate.”  At the time of his death, he had become a revered and successful artist on his own terms, without compromise or regret.

The fire of his individualistic stance was fueled and constantly reinforced by his friend and mentor Joan Mitchell.  Their rocky and often sadistic relationship led to months together in her Vétheuil, France studio where some of their best work resulted.  For Plansky, Mitchell’s La Tour estate provided lush landscapes with inspirational light that became the subject of his “La Tour Water Garden” series.

Elder Gallery has acquired the entire collection of Plansky’s paintings and drawings from his three studios in Brooklyn, East Meredith, NY, and Budapest, Hungary.  The 1000-piece collection has been catalogued and authenticated and is ready for distribution to interested art markets across the United States and Europe.

Plansky studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the New York Studio School. His work is represented in numerous private and public collections.  He taught, or lectured at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Chicago Art Institute, Maryland Institute College of Art, Harvard University, Smith College, Bennington College, Northwestern University, and other institutions of higher learning.

Plansky has been featured on CBS Radio’s The Osgood File and has been the subject of articles for The New York Times, The New Republic, Art and Antiques Magazine, Art in America, The Wall Street Journal, and The New Criterion among others.
