Shannon, Carol Joy
An award-winning artist with work in public, private and corporate collections around the world, Carol Joy Shannon is largely self-taught, but took good advantage of the mentors available during her years in Raleigh, including Benjamin Forrest Williams, the first curator of the NC Museum of Art, who studied with Matisse at the Louvre School. Carol Joy began painting full-time from the start, and she credits that first 10,000 hours with her signature, geometric style. Her public studio in Raleigh, and then her own gallery, gave CJS the input she needed to grow her body of work into several successful genres; rewarded with numerous solo and group shows in the Southeast, awards all over the country, and chosen as the featured art for shows from New Bern to Oklahoma City. Deconstructing landscapes and skylines into blocks of color and way lines, Shannon puts the viewer into the mix in a way that keeps revealing new layers over time. The City Series includes nearly 100 American and world cities, and her return to animals and birds after moving back to the Lowcountry has added a softer palette and the element of whimsy. All work is available as affordable reproductions on canvas and the artist loves to work with collectors and designers, painting over canvas prints with new palettes to suit new rooms.
